FACS 300 - 001

Interior Design III explores ADA guidelines and the construction of an assisted living facility that adheres to these rules.

Interior Design III

Smith Mountain Lake Retirement Home - This project consisted of constructing a nursing home from the ground up, abiding by all ADA requirements.

01

Adjacency Matrix

The goal of an adjacency matrix is to map out room locations to one another and how desirable the adjacency would be. This was done through Canva and included all rooms required for the nursing home.

02

Bubble Diagrams

Using the prior adjacency matrix, Canva was used to further map out floor plans and these were roughly drawn to get an idea of preferred room locations and movement within the building.

03

Blocking Plans

Blocking plans are more constructed and detailed versions of bubble diagrams, taking the rough ideas and creating hallways, rooms for stairwells as well as elevators. This was done with Canva.

04

Preliminary Floor Plans

Using the previous blocking plan, the same concept is used but is drafted neatly and logically with AutoCad. This phase simply shows walls, doors, and windows to get an idea of space and proportions.

05

Refined Floor Plans

Adding on to the preliminary plan, a much more detailed plan, or refined plan, is drafted in AutoCad. In this case for the assisted living facility, designers were to take into consideration ADA standards, including five-foot turnarounds for wheelchairs.

06

Concept Sketches

Concept sketches are a way to bring ideas to life - it includes noting finishes and materials. These included sketches of the dining room, nurses station, and reception as well as a couple of others.

07

Rendered Dining Room

Using SketchUp, materials, finishes, and furniture were added to the dining room to add a sense of realism to to design itself.

08

Rendered Apartment

Much like the rendered dining room, an assisted living apartment was fully furnished with materials and fixtures through Sketchup. These apartments followed the ADA guidelines.

09

Poster Presentations

These final poster presentations were the designers "pitch" to the clients, selling their work using Photoshop. They included almost all prior work done regarding the nursing home, from floor plans to FF&E.

10

Research Paper

The paper for this class consisted of researching how designers can accommodate certain needs common within the elderly such as diminished vision, ambulatory care, and memory care.

11

Client Proposal

The client proposal assignment had designers researching plots of land to construct an assisted living facility. Once this was accomplished, other assisted living facilities, nursing homes, etc. were documented based on their vicinity to the chosen land.
