Introduction to 3D Design
ARTS 114 - D01
ARTS 114 expands on the design process; sketching out ideas from a reference, then creating those ideas in a 3D form using wire, clay, and/or paper.

Emphasis Through Contrast in Size Part 1
Through the design process, the first part of this project consisted of a 3D structure with forms of contrasting sizes relating to scripture. Beginning with a concept sketch, then an armature, the structure was formed with clay. A large beehive is the basis for this project with smaller contrasting bees to emphasize both their dimensions.
03
Rhythm and Proportion
The second major project entailed creating a form expressing rhythm without the use of an armature. Proportions were to remain consistent between the sketch and the final product. The coiling technique was used, meaning the clay was stretched out and "snaked" to create the general shape, then, using the addition or subtraction method, the details were added.
04
Pattern to Balance
The addition and subtraction method was the basis for this project. A tile, or relief, was formed demonstrating symmetrical balance and a pattern. Clay was carved out from the negative space and lower planes while clay was added to create dimension on the higher planes.
05
Plane to Mass
To demonstrate plane to mass, a 3D form contrasting curvilinear and rectilinear planes was made through the construction of a robot. Individual components were traced, cut, folded, and then constructed to best represent the artists' sketch. In order to show the different planes, circular "buttons" were glued onto the chest to contrasting from the rectangular shape of the body.
06
To demonstrate asymmetrical balance, volumetric line gesture sketches of a human figure in a sports action was turned into a 3D wire sculpture. Cylindrical items of various sizes were used to wrap the wire around to really get the coiled look and shape. These coiled pieces were then attached together to form the human figure in its action pose
